Litecoin is a cryptocurrency that was created in 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google employee moreLitecoin is a cryptocurrency that was created in 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google employee. It was intended to be quicker and cheaper than Bitcoin, and quickly gained popularity as a result. Litecoin has a few key benefits, including its faster transaction speeds and lower fees.
Litecoin's faster transaction speeds are a result of the fact that it uses a different mining algorithm than Bitcoin, called Scrypt. This algorithm is more memory intensive and therefore more difficult to mine with specialized ASIC hardware. As a result, Litecoin transactions are processed more quickly than Bitcoin transactions.
Litecoin's lower fees are a result of its less crowded mempool (the pool of currently pending transactions that are waiting to be confirmed by miners). Since Litecoin transactions are processed more quickly, they don't get backed up as easily as Bitcoin transactions, and therefore the fees are generally lower.
In addition to its faster transaction speeds and lower fees, Litecoin has also been adopted by a number of merchants and businesses as a method of payment. For example, Overstock.com began accepting Litecoin in 2014, and more recently, PayPal announced that it would allow users to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies including Litecoin.
The role of the LTC token in all of this is simply as a means of exchanging value. Just like Bitcoin, Litecoin is a decentralized digital currency that is not backed by any government or financial institution. Instead, it relies on cryptography to secure and verify transactions, and the LTC token is used to facilitate those transactions.
