What are Meme Coins?

Meme Coins are cryptocurrencies that were originally created as a joke or from an internet meme culture. Well-known examples include Dogecoin and Shiba Inu. They often do not have a direct functional purpose in a blockchain system like other cryptocurrencies (e.g., Ethereum for smart contracts).

They have brought cryptocurrencies to the attention of a broader public and contribute to the volatility of the overall market. They may also attract new investors to the crypto market who are attracted to its fun nature and potential quick returns.

Many meme coins come as fast as they came. Some are also created with the goal of making quick profits for the creators through the hype before then selling (dumping) large amounts. Here one speaks of so-called “rugpulls.”
